Video on Orthodontic Care in a COVID Patient

As coronavirus continues to spread, the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dental Sciences, SGT University, geared up and prepared itself to fight and limit the spread of COVID 19 virus while performing patient care, by following guidelines and protocols set forth by the WHO. A small initiative was taken by the department to make a video of our preparedness to perform patient treatment taking all precautions to avoid the spread of the disease in office, protecting both staff and the patient.

The video shows how a patient entering into the orthodontic clinic will be guided by a trained dental assistant throughout his visit to the clinic and orthodontist performs the emergency treatment and finally demonstrates on a study model of few orthodontic emergencies that can be handled by the patient at home.

Every patient coming to the dental clinic has to be considered now as a suspected COVID-19 patient and will be treated accordingly. All protective gears required to be worn by the patient are given by an assistant at the entrance of the clinic itself, such as head cap, mask, gloves, shoe cover. The patient is escorted by the assistant to the dental chair keeping a safe distance from the patient and is asked to rinse the mouth with betadine solution. Then an orthodontist wearing complete PPE enters the operatory and performs the orthodontic procedure. The patient is then demonstrated using a study model, how minor orthodontic emergencies can be handled by the patient at home itself. Using a simple plucker, the patient can fold ends of a wire if it hurts while eating/speaking. It can also be used to remove a broken bracket or piece of wire if required. A wax piece easily available at home can be rolled into a small section and placed over the bracket/wire segment if impinging the lips/cheek.

The patient is finally guided by an assistant to exit the clinical area and properly remove the protective gear and dispose them off into designated bins. Finally, the operatory is sanitised using sodium hypochlorite sprayed by the housekeeping personnel and prepared to attend the next patient.
