Role and Importance of a Sports Physiotherapist


The Sports Physiotherapist is the one who is involved in prevention and management of injuries resulting from sports, restoring optimal function contributes to  improvement in sports performance and exercise participation of all ages and levels of ability. Sports Physiotherapists work in a variety of settings such as work with active recreational “athletes” or with a team, club level sport in the clinic setting and may attend training sessions. With advanced knowledge and skills, Sports Physiotherapists also work with more elite athletes, working and traveling with individuals or sports teams, integrating their services with other medical professionals, coaches, strength and conditioning personnel and other support staff. Within professional sport, many Sports Physiotherapists also work within the sporting organizations to coordinate physiotherapy, injury prevention, rehabilitation and injury surveillance programs. 


The most important role of a Sports Physiotherapist is in injury prevention, acute intervention, rehabilitation by applying evidence-based interventions, enhancement in performance of an athlete, in promotion of active lifestyle, promote safe, professional and anti- doping practices. They are also involved in research work, provide new information, encourage and promote the integration of new knowledge and skills. They can evaluate, diagnose, and treat many conditions like sprains, strains, tendinitis, overuse injuries, contusions, etc. Early degenerative changes, arthritis, and other inflammatory issues can impair the performance of an athlete both on and off the playing field. A Sports Physiotherapists can treat by exercise prescription, mobilization, soft tissue manipulation, taping, bandaging, etc. while helping the sportsperson to achieve better results from the health care plan. Sports Physiotherapists provide a variety of services to support the health goals of sportspersons. They have a great role in managing a wide range of injuries and health issues along with the prescription of various exercise programs that utilize strength and cardiovascular training. The physical assessment performed by Sports Physiotherapist is critical to achieving a customized exercise program. It considers their physical activities, health history, and other important information. Nutritional supplements and other aids can also be evaluated by the Sports Physiotherapist to ensure that they are obtaining the proper support for your physical activities. Sports physiotherapist has a great role in maintaining physical fitness of an athlete during the healing process by prescribing different exercises. In case of an injury, the Sports Physiotherapist can create a plan to help them return to their sport while minimizing the risk of re-injury and maximizing daily performance. A Sports Physiotherapist aims to maximize and improve the performance of an athlete. Thus, they should share a good relationship with the athlete with developing mutual trust and confidence so that the athlete will have confidence in SportsPhysiotherapist.
